Hello and Greetings from Salem, Oregon USA!  My name is Kristina and I LOVE going to the beach! I took this picture of my fun rubber boots in the tide pools at Yaquina Head Lighthouse in Newport, Oregon during a day trip this Summer!

I also love sending and receiving mail, so I'm really excited about International Postcard week!

These brave and persistent mail carriers from the past race the surging tide to make their appointed rounds.  Up until the early 1930's the road systems along the Oregon Coast consisted of Indian trails and a few very muddy roads.  So the vast stretches of sandy beach along the Oregon Coast served as roads for all manner of transpiration north and south.

This reproduction postcard is postmarked 100 years later in 2015.

The sender writes:
We drove all over the Oregon Coast today!  I saw elk, sea lions, ate Dungeness Crab and fish.  What a day!

This, the third capitol building, was built in 1938.  The architectural design is Modern Greek.  In the foreground is the Capitol Mall and Sprague Fountain.

We drove (slowly) past this impressive building on our trip to Salem / Keizer.  The "Gold Man" on top is an Oregon pioneer.

The Hoffman Bridge is a covered bridge near Crabtree in the U.S. state of Oregon.  It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 9teen87.   :D

Constructed in 1936, the bridge was named after its builder, Lee Hoffman. The creek and the nearby community were named after John Crabtree, who settled here in 1845.

Legends - Multnomah Falls, Princess Legend

Princess Legend

A legend is told of a terrible sickness that threatened the Multnomah people.  An old medicine man revealed that the sickness would pass if a maiden threw herself from a high cliff on the Big River to the rocks below.  When the Chief's daughter saw the sickness on her lover's face, she went to the cliff and plunged to her death.  Now, when the breeze blows through the water, a livery stream separates from the upper falls.  The misty stream fashions a form of the maiden, a token of the Great Spirit's acceptance of her sacrifice.

Multnomah Falls

The illustrious Multnomah Falls are located 30 miles east of Portland in the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area.

Multnomah Falls has drops in two major steps, split into an upper falls and a lower falls. The total height of the waterfall is 620 feet (189 m).  It is the tallest waterfall in the State of Oregon.

The bridge you see is  the Benson Footbridge, a 45-foot (14 m)-long footbridge that allows visitors to cross above the lower cascade.

Depoe Bay is a city in Lincoln County, Oregon, United States, located on U.S. Route 101 next to the Pacific Ocean. The population was 1,174 at the 2000 census.

The bay of the same name is a six-acre (24,000 m²) harbor that the city promotes as the world's smallest.

In 1975, the fishing trip sequence in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest was filmed in Depoe Bay.
In 2008, restaurant scenes from The Burning Plain were filmed in Depoe Bay, at the Tidal Raves restaurant.

A Cannon Beach tradition started in June 1964, Sandcastle Weekend attracts thousands of visitors and locals,  who come to build fanciful creations or just watch the fun.
The contest includes divisions ranging from Masters, who create amazing sculptures, to groups and children ready for creative fun in the sand.

Oregon - Multnomah Falls in Winter and Autumn

Multnomah Falls plunges a total of 621 feet over two cataracts, upper fall 542-feet and lower fall 69-feet.  It is the second highest year-round waterfall and fifth largest overall in the United States.  The flow of the falls varies during the seasons and is the highest during spring and winter.  Although it is not a common occurrence, in winter during extremely cold temperatures the falls can actually freeze, resembling a giant icicle.

Haceta Head Lighthouse, Oregon

Located twelve miles north of Florence on Oregon's picturesque central coast, the Haceta Head Lighthouse was completed in 1894 after two years of construction.  Made from local and imported materials, this lighthouse was built to withstand the harsh storms of this remarkable region.
