The estate was the home of Missouri artist George Caleb Bingham (1864-1870) and the W.H. Waggoner family (1879-1977).  The nineteen acre estate is located on the 1846 alignment of the Santa Fe road as it left from the Independence public square.

The music room is located in the circa 1855 section of the mansion and has been restored to its turn-of-the century appearance.  Canvasses from W.H. Waggoner's collection of late nineteenth century oil paintings are among the original furnishings.  The home was the residence of Missouri artist George Caleb Bingham, (1864-1870) and the W.H. Waggoner family (1879-1977).

In the early settlement days, before established roads were laid out, the estate grounds were considered a "short-cut" on the road that was later to become part of the "Santa Fe Trail".

Because of this high-traffic location the property had many owners between 1827 and 1878. Some hoping to make a living from outfitting the covered wagon trains, others were apparently just real-estate speculators.

Some of the owners played a significant role in the establishment of this area and the West. They became prominent businessmen, helping to found other communities and the beginnings of the Pony Express.

Almost National Postcard Week

Yet another colorful photo from the collection.  This one I took in 2011.  Ever drive past St. Louis on I-44 "Meramec Caverns" signs start before the bypass, many miles before Route 66.  Then more and more, until you approach Stanton, Missouri.  Let me say, it's worth the stop to relax, ice cream shop, nice cool walk, somewhat hokey, but informative tour but if you've never done it, make the stop!  Beautiful formations, well maintained property, excellent lighting effects.  Step back in time to the days when many roadside attractions like this were along the National highways.

A room within the cavern was used for Hollywood productions, most notably The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1973). In the particular movie, the site was used as the cave system where Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn find the hidden gold.

An episode of Lassie was also filmed in this part of the cave.

If you order a skyscraper shake or burger at Winstead's, be sure to bring a friends - or six.  These big burgers and legendary choclaty shakes led humorist and gourmand Calvin Trillin to declare its burger "The Best hamburger in the World," in Life Magazine.  Although he later chalked the comment up to hometown bragging rights, he's not the only one who thought they were tasty - Food Network Magazine named Winstead's home of the Best Burger in Missouri.

Roy Linwood Clark (born April 15, 1933) is an American country music musician and performer. He is best known for hosting Hee Haw, a nationally televised country variety show, from 1969–1992.

In 1983, Clark opened the Roy Clark Celebrity Theatre in Branson, becoming the first country music star to have his own venue there, and thus beginning a trend which led to Branson becoming a center of live music performance, as it is today. Many of the celebrities who play in Branson first performed at the Roy Clark Celebrity Theatre.

He has since sold the venue, it is now owned by the Hughes Brothers and renamed the Hughes American Family Theatre.

The cage for large birds in St Louis's Zoological Gardens, in Forest Park.  Built just prior to the famous Louisiana Purchase Exposition in 1904, it remains the largest bird cage in the world.  Storks, cranes, sea gulls, peacocks, pelicans and many other large birds are to be seen here

In front of St. Louis' famous Union Station is the Aloe Plaza which features a beautiful $50,000 fountain in which a series of 19 bronze figures by Carl Milles, noted Swedish sculptor are used to depict the meeting of the waters, the Missouri and the Mississippi.  It is named for the late husband of Mrs. Louis P. Aloe, who started the movement for the fountain and made a large contribution toward it.  The Aloe Plaza was dedicated in 1940.
