Qatar - Doha

Doha, Qatar

This postcard features The Dallah Coffee Pot Monument & Tornado Tower and was given to me in 2018.

In the Arabic world a dallah is considered a welcoming gesture, so the Dallah Coffee Pot Monument is a symbol of hospitality.

The Tornado Tower stands at a height of 640 feet (195 m) tall with 52 floors.  Construction began in 2006 and it was completed in 2008.   Due to the hour glass shape of the building, the total rentable office space available on each floor varies from 13,560–25,800 square feet.

Doha (literally: "the big tree") is the capital city of the state of Qatar.  It is Qatar's largest city, with over 60% of the nation's population residing in Doha or its surrounding suburbs.

The Aspire Tower, also known as Torch Hotel, is a 300-metre (984 ft) tall skyscraper hotel located in the Doha Sports City complex.  It served as the focal point for the 15th Asian Games hosted by Qatar in December 2006.

Khalifa International Stadium is a multi-purpose stadium in Doha, Qatar as part of the Doha Sports City complex.  It is named after Khalifa bin Hamad Al Thani, Qatar's former Emir. The final of 2011 AFC Asian Cup was held at this stadium and it will be the host for 2022 FIFA World Cup in 2022.

In the Doha Sports Complex is a large statue of a book with two hands coming out of it and holding a globe.  That is the picture you see in the bottom right hand corner of the above postcard.

Since the mid-1800s, Qatar transformed itself from a poor British protectorate known mostly for pearling into an independent state with significant oil and natural gas revenues, which enable Qatar to have a per capita income almost above the leading industrial countries of Western Europe. Qatar is rapidly gaining interest among foreigners as it hosted the 2006 Asian Games and is now scheduled to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
