Arizona - Tucson, Colossal Cave

Colossal Cave
Tucson, Arizona

Colossal Cave is located in the Escabrosa Limestone of Mississippian origin 300 million years old.  The limestone was formed in a great inland sea of that period from the calcium deposits laid down by the remains of a sea creature called the crinoid, a small plant-like sea animal.  The mountains in which Colossal Cave is formed were a mid-tertiary development caused by a crustal upheaval of the earth approximately 40 million years ago.  The cave system was carved out of the solid limestone by the action of seeping water that eventually formed an underground river with many intricate tributaries.  The full extent of the Cave is not yet known but explorations have reached a length of 39 miles.  The many weird and beautiful crystal formations that cover the interior of the cave were formed over a period of thens of thousands of years.  The number of different crystal formations are astronomical and their sizes vary from the minute to the colossal.

This was written several years ago, so I wanted to find out how long they found out the cave was.

On the official park website it reads:
Colossal Cave has never been fully explored. Although there are an estimated 39 miles of cave tunnels.

So it looks like they never found more tunnels since back in the 1970's.

Arizona - Sunset with Cacti

Arizona Sunset
Photo: Richard Strange

The sender writes:
Arizona!
Land of dirt and cacti.  I actually like it here though...for an hour at least.  Then it gets mundane and hot.  We took photos with dinosaurs though!
I though you would like the sun cut out on this postcard.

(She was right - I do like it :)

Arizona - University of Phoenix Stadium

University of Phoenix Stadium
Glendale, Arizona

The 63,500-seat home of the Arizona Cardinals has been named the University of Phoenix Stadium.  This is the first time a National Football League venue has been named after an educational institution.

The stadium features the first fully retractable natural grass playing surface built in the United States on top of an AirField Systems synthetic drainage system. An opening on one side of the stadium allows the playing field to move to the exterior of the building, allowing the entire natural turf playing surface to be exposed to daylight when it is not in use and also allowing the floor to be used for other purposes without damaging the playing surface.

The University of Phoenix, a for-profit university specializing in adult education, acquired the naming rights in September 2006, shortly after the stadium had opened under the name Cardinals Stadium. The "University of Phoenix" name is applied as a corporate sponsor, and not as the home stadium of the University (which has no intercollegiate athletics program).

Arizona - Cottonwood, Fishing in the Verde River

Fishing in the Verde River, near Cottonwood, Arizona

Although most people think of Arizona as a "desert state" it has summer vacation areas just as cool and comfortable as those in the so called "Northern States" and many secluded, inviting and well-stocked fishing streams.  The Verde River is one of these.
