Graslei (English: Grass Quay) is a quay (area for walking by the water) in the historic city center of Ghent, Belgium, located on the right bank of the Leie river. The quay opposite of the Graslei is called Korenlei. Both quays were part of the medieval port and are now a cultural and tourist hotspot of the city, with a high concentration of cafés.

This is from our cruise from Southhampton, England to Paris, (LaHarve) France and Brugge Belgium.  We loved Brugge!  We toured the very yummy chocolate factory and saw Michelangelo's Madonna and infant child, the same one from the movie The Monuments Men.

The Beguinage is one of those typical areas in Bruges where one can find more peace and quiet than in the sometimes busy and overcrowded streets of the town center. The Beguinage is a group of houses around a little garden covered with large poplar trees. It was here that during the last seven centuries lived the beguines of Bruges. In 1937 the beguinage became a monastery for the Benedictine sisters who still live here now.

The Beguinage of Bruges was founded in 1245 by the Countess of Flanders, Margaretha of Constantinopel, daughter of Count Baldwin who conquered Constantinopel (now Istambul) during the crusades.

Visitors enter the place via a bridge over the canal. The entrance gate bears the date 1776. A lot of houses, however, are much older than that. Most date from the 17th and 18th century. Some houses were built in the 19th century in neo-gothic style. In the southern part is a little dead end street where still some houses of the 15th-16th century can be found.

The Cathedral of St. Michael and St. Gudula is a Roman Catholic church on the Treurenberg Hill in Brussels, Belgium.

A chapel dedicated to St. Michael was probably built on the Treurenberg hill as early as the 9th century. In the 11th century it was replaced by a Romanesque church.

In the thirteenth century, Henry I, Duke of Brabant ordered two round towers to be added to the church. Henry II, Duke of Brabant instructed the building of a Gothic collegiate church in 1226. The choir was constructed between 1226 and 1276. It took about 300 years to complete the entire church. It was completed just before the reign of the emperor Charles V commenced in 1519.

My country has many beautiful places with lots of history (Bruges, Ghent, Antwerp, Brussels...)

We are also famous for our delicious food (chocolates, waffles, beers, and French Fries (originally from Belgium))

On a side note, I have been there and toured a chocolate factory.  Their chocolates are Amazing!  Later we had a waffle with chocolate topping.  Yes, it was delicious.  :D

Margaret of Austria: regent of the Netherlands, both Belgium and Holland, from 1507 until 1515 and 1519 until her death in 1530; was born 10 January 1480, a daughter of Emperor Maximilian I.  After the death of her brother Philip I of Castile in 1506, her brother's Burgundian territories were inherited by his son, the future Emperor Charles V.  Due to Charles' youth, Margaret was named as his guardian, and governed the Netherlands on her nephew's behalf.  Margaret died 1 December 1530.

Silvius Brabo is a mythical Roman soldier who is said to have killed a giant, and by this would have created the name Brabant.

This story was used to explain the name Antwerp (meaning hand throwing). Brabo once killed a giant, called Druon Antigoon, who asked money from people who wanted to pass the bridge over the river Scheldt. When they didn't want to or couldn't pay, he cut off their hand and threw it in the river. Because of this Brabo also removed the hand of the giant, and threw it into the river.

As seen in this postcard, the legend is shown on the statue in front of the Antwerp City Hall.

The Battle of Waterloo was fought on Sunday, 18 June 1815, near Waterloo in present-day Belgium, then part of the United Kingdom of the Netherlands. A French army under the command of Napoleon Bonaparte was defeated by the armies of the Seventh Coalition.

Upon Napoleon's return to power in March 1815, many states that had opposed him formed the Seventh Coalition and began to mobilise armies. Two large forces assembled close to the north-eastern border of France. Napoleon chose to attack in the hope of destroying them before they could join in a coordinated invasion of France with other members of the coalition. Waterloo was the decisive engagement of the Waterloo Campaign and Napoleon's last.

The defeat at Waterloo ended Napoleon's rule as Emperor of the French.
