Thailand - Bangkok Street Scene Shopping

One of the world's great tourist destinations, Bangkok has been the Capital of Thailand since 1782.

This postcard is of a yellow strip mall with green garbage cans.  I am not to sure how this shows off Bangkok.  I think that is why I like it, because it is different.

Thai cuisine blends five fundamental tastes: sweet, spicy, sour, bitter and salty. Some common ingredients used in Thai cuisine include garlic, chillies, lime juice, lemon grass, and fish sauce. The staple food in Thailand is rice,  which is included in almost every meal. Thailand is the world's largest exporter of rice, and Thais domestically consume over 100 kg of milled rice per person per year.  Over 5000 varieties of rice from Thailand are preserved in the rice gene bank of the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), based in the Philippines.

The whole complex was built as a summer palace by King Mongkut, with construction finishing in 1860.

The site was registered as a historical park on August 27, 1979, with two of the palace buildings now housing a branch of the Thai National Museum.

Phuket, formerly known as Thalang (Tha-Laang) is one of the southern provinces (changwat) of Thailand.

Phuket, which is approximately the size of Singapore, is Thailand’s largest island. The island is connected to mainland Thailand by two bridges.

Phuket formerly derived its wealth from tin and rubber. The island was on one of the major trading routes between India and China, and was frequently mentioned in foreign ship logs of Portuguese, French, Dutch and English traders. The region now derives much of its income from tourism.

From their website:

As the first-in-Thailand place of its kind, Phuket Butterfly Garden & Insect World was founded by Dr. Prasit Koysiripong in February 1990 under the name "Phuket Butterfly Garden & Insect World"

Besides being created as a place for the public to admire the beautiful and amazing natural creation, the Phuket Butterfly Garden & Insect World was also built as a research centre on butterflies and insects in their natural habitats.

All butterflies in the "Phuket Butterfly Garden & Insect World" are bred here. We take part in breeding and preserving endangered and rare species.

After the breeding process, a number of butterflies are sent back to nature to help create ecological balance by letting them breed naturally.

Thailand - Koh Panyi Islands

Koh Panyi Islands

Ko Panyi is a fishing village in Phang Nga Province, Thailand notable for being built on stilts by Indonesian fishermen. The population consists of roughly 200 families or between 1,500 and 2,000 people.

The settlement at Ko Panyi was established at the end of the 18th century by nomadic Malay fisherman.  It was during this time that the law limited land ownership solely to people of Thai national origins, and due to this fact the settlement was, for the most part, built on stilts within the protection of the island's bay, providing easy access for the life of a fisherman. With the increase of wealth for the community, due to the growing tourism industry within Thailand, purchase of land on the island itself became a possibility, and the first structures of relevance were built; a mosque and a freshwater well.

In the late 20th century, the community found it difficult to subsist solely on the fishing industry and the postman proposed to invite tourists to the village to benefit the residents. Nowadays this is one of the main attractions on tours of Phang Nga Bay from Phuket, often serving as a lunch stop. With the increasing number of tourists, a number of seafood restaurants are present on the island, as well as various stalls selling souvenirs. The village became a pit stop during a leg of the 19th season on the hit U.S. reality-competition show, The Amazing Race.

About 40 metres (130 ft) from its shores lies a 20 metres (66 ft) tall islet Ko Tapu (the rock you see in the above postcard). The island is a part of the Ao Phang Nga National Park. Since 1974, when it was featured in the James Bond movie The Man with the Golden Gun, it is popularly called James Bond Island.

Thailand - Rice Farmer in Nong Khai

Farmer nongkhai

some information from the sender:

I'm currently visiting Nong Khai, a Thi-Lao (Thailand and Laos) border town in northeastern Thailand.

This cards shows the typical harvesting of rice.  Scenes like this still exist not only in Nong Khai (where this card is from) but all over southeast Asia and Taiwan.  We have straw hats too like the one worn by the farmer on this postcard.

The following is from their website: (http://www.gibbonproject.org)

The Gibbon Rehabilitation Project (GRP) was set up in 1992 by Mr Noppadol Preuksawan, the chief of the Royal Forest Department in Phuket at that time, Mr. Thavrn Sri-Oon, Bang Pae Sub-Station chief, the Asian Wildlife Fund and an American Zoologist called Terrance Dillon Morin. In 1994 the Wild Animal Rescue Foundation of Thailand (WARF) started to support the project, we are now a research division of WARF.

Objectives (more information for each is on their webpage and information on how to adopt a gibbon for a year)...

1. Develop a method to successfully rehabilitate white-handed gibbons back into their natural habitat.

2. End the demand for the illegal use of gibbons as tourists attractions and as pets.

3. To repopulate the last remaining rainforest in Phuket-Khao Pra Theaw Non-Hunting Area (National Park, Wildlife and Plant Conservation Department).

4. To create awareness of the importance of conservation of the environment.

5. Provide the opportunity for volunteers to study the white-handed gibbon.

Thailand - Phuket Vegetarian Festival

Phuket Vegetarian Festival
2012

- - - - - - -

The Phuket Vegetarian Festival is a colourful event held over a nine-day period in October, celebrating the Chinese community's belief that abstinence from meat and various stimulants during the ninth lunar month of the Chinese calendar will help them obtain good health and peace of mind.

One of the most exciting aspects of the festival are the various, (and sometimes gruesome) ceremonies which are held to invoke the gods. Firewalking, body piercing and other acts of self mortification undertaken by participants acting as mediums of the gods, have become more spectacular and daring as each year goes by. Men and women puncture their cheeks with various items including knives, skewers and other household items. It is believed that the Chinese gods will protect such persons from harm, and little blood or scarring results from such mutilation acts. This is definitely not recommended for the faint hearted to witness.

Loud noises are another feature of the Vegetarian Festival. Drums are played and firecrackers are randomly lit. People try to make as much commotion as possible in order to ward off evil spirits. In 2011, there were 74 injuries and one death reported during the festival. Perhaps surprisingly, it was not the self-mortifying rituals that led to most of these injuries but wayward firecrackers.
