Pretoria is the administrative capital of South Africa. It is one of the country's three capital cities, serving as the seat of the administrative branch of government.

Pretoria is named after the Voortrekker leader Andries Pretorius, and within South Africa it is sometimes called the "Jacaranda City" due to the thousands of jacaranda trees planted in its streets, parks and gardens.

Since the end of the 17th century, Robben Island has been used to isolate certain people. The island was also used as a leper colony and animal quarantine station in the mid to late 1800's

It was here that future President of South Africa and Nobel Laureate Nelson Mandela and future South African President Kgalema Motlanthe, alongside many other political prisoners, spent decades imprisoned during the apartheid era. Current South African President Jacob Zuma was also imprisoned there for ten years.

Here is a small list of former prisoners held at Robben Island

Autshumato, one of the first freedom fighters against colonialism
Dennis Brutus, former activist and poet
Patrick Chamusso, former activist of the African National Congress
Nceba Faku, former Metro Mayor of Port Elizabeth
Mosiuoa Lekota, imprisoned in 1974, President and Leader of the Congress of the People

South Africa - Young Zulus, Sister and Brother

Young Zulus  -  Natal  -  South Africa

Kraal is an Afrikaans and Dutch word (also used in South African English) for an enclosure for cattle or other livestock, located within an African settlement or village surrounded by a palisade, mud wall, or other fencing, roughly circular in form.

Although for a certain period of time, European South Africans and historians commonly referred to the entire settlement as a kraal.

South Africa - Cape Point Lighthouse

Cape Point - South Africa

The lighthouse at Cape Point commissioned in 1850.  Rusted wrecks along the coast attest to the untamed fury of these tempestuous seas.

Cape Point is a promontory (a prominent mass of land that overlooks lower-lying land or a body of water) at the southeast corner of the Cape Peninsula.

Fishing is good along the coast but the unpredictable swells make angling from the rocks very dangerous. Over the years scores of fishermen have been swept to their deaths from the rocky platforms by freak waves.  The bay is also famous - or infamous - for its great white sharks, which hunt the Cape Fur Seals that live in the area.

Cape point is not the southernmost point in Africa; that is Cape Agulhas, approximately 150 kilometres (93 mi) to the east-southeast.

The Lighthouse :  (the old lighthouse is shown in the above postcard)

The new lighthouse is at a lower elevation (87 meters above sea level), for two reasons: the old lighthouse could be seen 'too early' by ships rounding the point towards the east, causing them to approach too closely. Secondly, foggy conditions often prevail at the higher levels, making the older lighthouse invisible to shipping. On 18 April 1911, the Portuguese liner Lusitania was wrecked just south of Cape Point on Bellows Rock for precisely this reason, prompting the relocation of the lighthouse.

The Voortrekkers (Afrikaans and Dutch for pioneers, literally "those who trek ahead", "fore-trekkers") were emigrants during the 1830s and 1840s who left the Cape Colony (British at the time, but founded by the Dutch) moving into the interior of what is now South Africa.
