Mostar was named after the bridge keepers (mostari) who in the medieval times guarded the Stari Most (Old Bridge) over the Neretva. The Old Bridge (An UNESCO site) was built by the Ottomans in the 16th century and is one of Bosnia and Herzegovina's most recognizable landmarks.

Bosnia and Herzegovina - Sarajevo Traditional Food, Cevapi

Sarajevo

The sender writes:

On this card you can see our traditional food.
Name: Cevapi
It is Bosnian fast food.

The sender also wrote their e-mail for future swaps, But I can't read it.  :-(   I tried several different ways, but I never heard back from them.  It is a shame, I would love to have more cards from Bosnia and Herzegovina!

Mostar is a city and municipality in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the largest and one of the most important cities in the Herzegovina region. It is situated on the Neretva river and is the fifth-largest city in the country. Mostar was named after the bridge keepers (natively: mostari) who in the medieval times guarded the Stari Most (Old Bridge) over Neretva river. The Old Bridge is one of the city's most recognizable landmarks.

The sender writes that during the war of the 90's the bridge was totally destroyed, but since 2004 it is again rebuilt and open for public use.  They also write that it was rebuilt with the same rocks and stones taken back from the river.

Sarajevo is the capital and largest city of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Although settlement in the area stretches back to prehistoric times, the modern city arose as an Ottoman stronghold in the 15th century. Sarajevo has attracted international attention several times throughout its history. In 1885 Sarajevo was the first city in Europe and the second city in the world to have a full-time electric tram network running through the city, the first being San Francisco, California.  In 1914 it was the site of the assassination of the Archduke of Austria that sparked World War I. Seventy years later, it hosted the 1984 Winter Olympics. For nearly four years, from 1992–1996, the city suffered from a siege during the Bosnian War for independence.

Today the city is undergoing post-war reconstruction, and is the fastest growing city in Bosnia and Herzegovina.  The travel guide series, Lonely Planet, has named Sarajevo as the 43rd best city in the world,  and in December 2009 listed Sarajevo as one of the top ten cities to visit in 2010.
