Scotland - Glasgow Science Centre

Glasgow Science Centre, Pacific Quay, Scotland
2009

- - - - - - -

Glasgow Science Centre is a visitor attraction located on the south bank of the River Clyde in Glasgow, Scotland. It is a purpose-built science centre composed of three principal buildings which are the Science Mall, an IMAX cinema and the Glasgow Tower.

Science Mall
The Science Mall is a titanium-clad crescent shape structure that houses three floors of over 250 interactive science-learning exhibits, a Science Show Theatre and the Glasgow Science Centre Planetarium. The planetarium contains a Zeiss optical-mechanical projector that projects images of the night sky onto a 15m diameter dome.

IMAX Cinema
The IMAX cinema is the first and currently only IMAX cinema to have been built in Scotland. The single auditorium seats 370 in front of a rectangular screen measuring 60 feet by 80 feet and has the capability to show 3D films as well as standard 2D films in IMAX format.  It opened to the public in October 2000, several months prior to the opening of the two other buildings.

Glasgow Tower
At 127 metres high, Glasgow Tower is currently the tallest tower in Scotland and the second tallest free-standing structure after the Inverkip Power Station chimney. It also holds a Guinness World Record for being the tallest tower in the world capable of rotating 360 degrees from its base to its top.

Scotland - St. Andrew's Cathedral

St. Andrew's Cathedral and the River Ness, Inverness, Scotland

Photo J. Cooke

St. Andrew's Cathedral (1866 - 71) stands in a commanding position on the banks of the River Ness in the centre of Inverness.  The interior has many interesting features.  On the outside transept window facing the river are a wheel and a horse on each side of the arch.  The stones for the walls had been lifted by a pulley and a horizontal wheel pulled round by a horse.  Nearing the end of the construction a stone fell and killed the horse which is now remembered by the memorial.  The Cathedral has eleven bells, ten for ringing and one for tolling, and they can also be chimed.

Great Britain Flag

Union Flag
Originated in 1606 (Union of England / Scotland)
Re-designed in 1801 (Union of Great Britain / Ireland)
2014

- - - - - - -

On 12 April 1606, a new flag to represent the union between England and Scotland was specified in a royal decree, according to which the flag of England (a red cross on a white background, known as St George's Cross), and the flag of Scotland (a white saltire on a blue background, known as the Saltire or St Andrew's Cross), would be joined together, forming the flag of England and Scotland for maritime purposes.

The design of the current Union Flag dates from a Royal Proclamation following the union of Great Britain and Ireland in 1801. It combines aspects of the flag mentioned above with the red saltire of St Patrick to represent Ireland.

Wales, despite also being part of the Union, has never been represented on the flag.

Scotland - Urquhart, Loch Ness E. Castle

Loch Ness E. Castle - Urquhart

Real Photo postcard

- - - - - - -

Urquhart Castle sits beside Loch Ness in Scotland. Though extensively ruined, it was in its day one of the largest strongholds of medieval Scotland.  It is also near this castle that the majority of Nessie (Loch Ness Monster) sightings occur.

The Loch Ness Monster is said to live in Loch Ness in the Scottish Highlands. It is similar to other supposed lake monsters in Scotland and elsewhere, though its description varies from one account to the next. Popular interest and belief in the animal has varied since it was brought to the world's attention in 1933.

The scientific community regards the Loch Ness Monster as a modern-day myth, and explains sightings as a mix of hoaxes and wishful thinking. Despite this, it remains one of the most famous examples of cryptozoology (search for animals whose existence has not been proven).

The legendary monster has been affectionately referred to by the nickname Nessie since the 1950s.
