USA - Virginia, Arlington, History of the Pentagon

 History of the Pentagon

The Pentagon is the headquarters of the United States Department of Defense.  Located in Arlington, Virginia it sits on 34 acres of land including the five acre center court.

Construction began on September 11, 1941 and was completed on January 15, 1943.

The sender writes: Greetings from inside the Pentagon!  Some of the highlights of today were  seeing the 9/11 memorial chapel, the chiefs of staff offices and standing inside one of the offices that took a direct hit on 9/11 and was re-built.  What an amazing experience it was!

This was postmarked in 2023.

Virginia - Staunton, Woodrow Wilson and His Birthplace

Woodrow Wilson's Birthplace
Staunton, Virginia
This house served as the Presbyterian Manse at the time of Wilson's birth and boyhood.  Now a national shrine and mecca for visitors from all over the world.

- - - - - - -

The Woodrow Wilson Birthplace is referred to as The Manse, which is the name of a Presbyterian minister's home. The Manse was constructed in 1846 by the Staunton First Presbyterian Church. It has twelve rooms with twelve fireplaces. The Wilson family moved into the house in 1855 and Thomas Woodrow Wilson was born in what is now called the "birth room" on December 28, 1856. The Wilsons left The Manse in early 1858.

After the Wilsons moved out of The Manse it remained a Presybterian minister's home well into the 1920s. It was only after Woodrow Wilson's death that his widow, Edith Bolling Galt Wilson, returned to Staunton with plans of creating a memorial. The house was restored to its 1850s look over the next 80 years, which included removing bathrooms, changing light fixtures, and stripping paint. Recently The Manse was restored to its original red brick, having been painted white for almost a century.

It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1964, and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1966.

Shown on the postcard is also the Woodrow Wilson presidential car, a Pierce Arrow limousine.

Virginia - Arlington National Cemetery

Arlington National Cemetery
Our nation's most hallowed ground was officially designated as a military cemetery in June 15, 1846 on the grounds of the Arlington House, once house of Robert E. Lee and occupied by Union soldiers during the Civil War.  One of the most visited places at the cemetery is the eternal flame and state marker identifying the grave of President John F. Kennedy. The sign directs also to the Tomb of Unknown, that contains the remains of unknown American soldiers from World Wars I and II the Korean Conflict and (until 1998) the Vietnam War.

The sender writes:

The Pentagon is a very interesting building indeed! Above it you can see the Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial and almost the Capitol Building (the dome is cut off).

The Pentagon is the headquarters of the United States Department of Defense, located in Arlington County, Virginia.

Designed by the American architect George Bergstrom (1876–1955), and built by general contractor John McShain, the building was dedicated on January 15, 1943, after ground was broken for construction on September 11, 1941.

The Pentagon is the world's largest office building by floor area, with about 6,500,000 sq ft (604,000 m2), of which 3,700,000 sq ft (344,000 m2) are used as offices. Approximately 23,000 military and civilian employees and about 3,000 non-defense support personnel work in the Pentagon. It has five sides, five floors above ground (plus two basement levels), and five ring corridors per floor with a total of 17.5 miles (28.2 km) of corridors. The Pentagon includes a five-acre (20,000 m²) central plaza, which is shaped like a pentagon.

On September 11, 2001, exactly 60 years since the building's groundbreaking, hijacked American Airlines Flight 77 was crashed into the western side of the Pentagon, killing 189 people, including 64 people aboard the plane and 125 working in the building.

Virginia - Williamsburg, Royal Governor's Palace

Royal Governor's Palace, Williamsburg, Virginia

The Governor's Palace 1710-1715
The Palace and its dependencies, preeminent among notable estates in colonial America, have been rebuilt on original foundations.  Many of the rooms in the Palace are of special interest because of the collection of antique furniture, paintings and other furnishings that have been chosen to conform with inventories of royal governors.  The gardens are considered more typical of formal eighteenth century English gardens than any others in America

Virginia - Alexandria, Giant Watering Can, from La Quinta

Greetings From Route LQ (Hotel chain La Quinta)

Hey, It Saves on Yard Work.

Giant Watering Can
The coolest thing about the World's Largest Watering can is the fact that it actually works.  Too bad the pot it's watering appears to be pretty much empty.  No matter - you'll find a large selection of trees, bushes and plants on-site at Holly, Woods, and Vines, the garden center where the can is located.  For those who don't have their own enormous watering cans, there is also a large selection of neon-colored plastic palm trees.
