Norway - Frognerseteren, or Xania (Oslo) in 1907

1084 - Fra.  Frognerseteren.

This vintage, real photo postcard was postmarked in 1907.
I believe this is the restaurant that is still open today.  The oldest part of the restaurant opened in 1891.
It is still known for serving people who are snow skiing.

I can not make out the photographers mark, but looks something like, 'XANIA'.
I looked up Xania and found this....
“Xania” is a historic abbreviation or alternate spelling for Kristiania, the former name of Oslo, Norway.

Photo-Art, George Talanos, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

This real-photo postcard is postmarked around 1955.

The sender writes:
All continues to go well.  Africa is almost beyond belief for the boys as well as myself.  We have an interview with the king tomorrow.  As he rarely grants them to visitors, we are all quite excited.

Haile Selassie I  (23 July 1892 – 27 August 1975), was Ethiopia's regent from 1916 to 1930 and Emperor from 1930 to 1974.

He is on the stamps that are on the back of this postcard.  I wonder if this is who they were able to interview???

Switzerland - Great St. Bernard Pass in 1928

1928 Gd St Bernard

Edition Phot. Perrocet, Lausanne

 - - - - - - - - - - - -

Great St Bernard Pass is the most ancient pass through the Western Alps, with evidence of use as far back as the Bronze Age and surviving traces of a Roman road. In 1800 Napoleon's army used the path to enter Italy.  Having been bypassed by easier and more practical routes, its value today is mainly historical and recreational.

A hospice for travellers was founded in 1049 by Saint Bernard of Menthon and came to be named after him in the 16th century, along with the pass. It was not the first hospice in the pass. Buildings were probably there since the Roman mansio, but the region was not secure and they were destroyed many times. The first concern of the founder of the current monastery was to clear the region of bandits and keep the pass safe for travellers, the role of rescuers developing naturally. The hospice later became famous for its use of St. Bernard dogs in rescue operations. Pope Pius XI confirmed Bernard as patron saint of the Alps in 1923.

New Mexico - White Sands National Monument (5 Postcards)

Sunset on the White Sands,
near Alamogordo, New Mexico

By all means, visit the White Sands at sunset!  The feeling of mystery, the quietude of the great expanse of snow white sands, the golden sunset turning at its last moments to rose and violet as darkness finally closes in.  Then the day is gone, leaving this great bulk of whiteness still visible thru the shades of night.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

The White Sands National Monument is a U.S. National Monument located about 25 km (15 miles) southwest of Alamogordo, New Mexico, at an elevation of 4235 feet (1291 m).  It is a field of white sand dunes composed of gypsum crystals.

Gypsum is rarely found in the form of sand because it is water-soluble. Normally, rain would dissolve the gypsum and carry it to the sea. Since the Tularosa Basin has no outlet to the sea, rain that dissolves gypsum from the surrounding San Andres and Sacramento Mountains is trapped within the basin, and the rain either sinks into the ground or forms shallow pools which subsequently dry out and leave gypsum in a crystalline form, called selenite, on the surface. Weathering and erosion eventually breaks the crystals into sand-size grains that are carried away by the prevailing winds from the southwest, forming white dunes. The dunes constantly change shape and slowly move downwind, covering the plants in their path. Some species of plants, however, can grow rapidly enough to avoid being buried by the dunes.

Ripples of the White Sands, National Monument,
Near Alamogordo, New Mexico

The 176,000 acres of crystallized gypsum which comprise the area known as the "White Sands" are blown into ripples and dunes, while the vegetation struggles thru in a fight for existence.  In the interior of the area, where drifts are extremely high there is no vegetation of any kind.
