Texas - San Antonio, The Alamo at Night

The Alamo
San Antonio, Texas

The siege of the Alamo continues to be debated, although there is no doubt of what the battle has come to symbolize.  People continue to "Remember the Alamo" as the ultimate struggle against overwhelming odds.  It is a place where men sacrificed themselves for freedom.  For this reason the Alamo remains hallowed ground and a shrine of Texas Pride and Liberty.

El Alamo
El sitio del Alamo sigue siendo un tema de debate, aunque no cabe duda que La Batalla del Alamo es símbolo del sacrificio humano por la Libertad.

Texas - San Antonia, The Alamo Patio

Patio at the Alamo

Fiesta de las Luminarias, one of the most beautiful events of the winter holiday season, takes place on the River Walk where the river is lined with 7,000 luminarias (candle-lit, sand-filled bags) to light Mary and Joseph's path as they search for shelter on the night before Jesus' birth. The procession is a Mexican-American tradition and takes place on nine nights in December. The festival procession has been held on the River Walk for over 40 years.

Texas - The Alamo, Did You Know?

Did you Know?
The Alamo also known as the "Mission San Antonio de Valero" has not always been at its current location.  The original mission as founded near the headwaters of San Pedro Creek in 1718.  In 1719 the mission was relocated a short distance to the south of where it is today.  A 1724 storm destroyed structures at the new site, prompting Spanish officials to relocate the mission to its present spot.  It was the mission compound constructed here at the 1724 location that later gained fame as the Alamo.  While this is the third spot for Mission San Antonio de Valero, it is the only place the "Alamo" has ever been.

Texas - San Antonio, Buckhorn Curio Store

San Antonio, Texas, Where the Sunshine Spends the Winter

East Room of the Famous Buckhorn Curio Store.  Originally Buckhorn Bar - Established 1881

Partial interior view of the Famous Buckhorn curio Store, classed by tourists to more of a Museum than a store, for the countless numbers of horned animal heads displayed on the walls and ceiling of this unique establishment form a Natural History exhibit without equal.

Some of the outstanding specimens are: A Texas deer head with antlers containing 78 points, also a full body mounted of a Texas Long-horn Steer the horns of which are over 8 feet tip to tip. An African Gorilla full body mounted stands 5 feet 4 inches tall and the world's largest steer head is also displayed with horns measuring 7 feet 9 inches tip to tip, 11 feet along curve of horns and 21 inches around  base of horns.  The frames on wall pictured on this card contain designs formed of the rattles of thousands of Diamond-Back Rattle Snakes.

A mounted Texas Armadillo is pictured along with Mexican hand-made pottery, drawn-work and Serape, representing some of the typical curios and souvenirs of the South-West and Mexico.
