South Dakota - Mount Rushmore 1956

Mount Rushmore
Black Hills of South Dakota

The Mount Rushmore National Memorial, where the busts of four great American leaders - George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln - are sculptured in heroic proportions, is the largest monument ever carved.  The late Gutzon Borglum exacted the carvings in a granite mountain 6,000 feet high.  The busts are 450 feet high.  The shrine is rightful called the "Shrine of Democracy."
