Rhode Island - Providence, State House (Capitol Building)

Rhode Island State House
Providence, R.I.

Constructed of white Georgia marble, the State House, also called the State Capitol, rises 235 ft. to the statue of "The Independent Man" at the top. The unsupported marble dome is one of only four of this design in the world.  The massive marble structure was designed by Charles Follen McKim of New York.  More that 13 hundred tons of iron floor beams and 15 million bricks were used in its construction.

The Independent man, sculpted by George Brewster, cast by Gorham and lifted in place on Dec. 18, 1899.
