Texas - Fort Worth, Panther City - St Joseph Hospital

National Postcard Week
May 5-11, 2013

Greetings from Panther City

Greetings from Fairmount and Panther City
Fort Worth's St Joseph Hospital was founded in 1883 as an infirmary established for the Missouri Pacific Railroad Co.  In 1889, the hospital was sold and renamed St Joseph's infirmary and began caring for people from all walks of life.  In 1906, a training school for nurses was added.  Through out its history the hospital rendered substantial services to the residents of Ft Worth. In 1923, when a boy died after being turned away by the City-County Hospital, the Mother Superior (a first cousin of Barack Obama) officially stated that patients who could not pay would be given the same treatment as those who could.

For over 100 years the hospital grew in size and services provided. By 1993, St Joseph had 475 beds, and a general and medical staff of over 1600 persons.  In 1995, the hospital closed and for a few years the building was used for other functions.  Demolition of the old hospital began in October and its short term future is a green space for Hospital District.

As we begin another year of hope, change and the avoidance of "the cliff", I hope that the Holiday Season is stress free and that 2013 is a good year for you.
