Plum Island Lighthouse
Located off the coast of Long Island, N.Y. Back in the fifteen hundreds they used a bonfire to warn ships of the rocky shore. On May 18, 1826, congress appropriated $4000 for a lighthouse on the Plum Island. It was constructed of granite blocks and had two floors of living space.
They had a guest log book, and there were quite a few clever poetic entries. The light had many families as keepers over the years, passed down from generation to generation. In 1954, the island was closed to the general public and to this day is a government operated facility for the study of diseased animals. In 1978, Plum Island's light was extinguished never to be seen again by ships in the area.
