Caernarfon Castle
On the site of an early motte, this tremendous construction was built after 1283, being chiefly designed by James of St. George. The Castle's strength grew after this date to prevent attacks being successful like the one in 1294 when the Welsh Prince Madoc entered the Castle below the Eagle Tower and conquered it, doing much damage, particularly to timber work. Indeed, building continued until 1327 at which time Wales was comparatively peaceful.
The Castle has thirteen towers and adjoining walls which are seven to nine feet thick and have seen the Investiture of Price Edward as Prince of Wales in 1911 and of Prince Charles in 1969.
Printed in Great Britain by J. Arthur Dixon
