Hampstead Heath Fair 1892
The Heath's 791 acres had long been a popular destination, but the opening of Hampstead Heath station in 1860 brought even more day-trippers. By Easter 1892, when this photo was taken, the Heath was attracting up to 100,000 visitors for the regular bank holiday fairs - so dense were the crowds around the station that nine people were crushed to death as they tried to escape form a storm on the evening of 18 April.

Hampstead Heath (locally known as "the Heath") is a large, ancient London park, covering 320 hectares (790 acres). This grassy public space sits astride a sandy ridge, one of the highest points in London, running from Hampstead to Highgate. The Heath is hilly, with ponds, recent and ancient woodlands, playgrounds, and a training track.
