The Belize flag was adopted on September 21, 1981. It features the coat of arms that recalls the logging industry that led to the British settlement in Belize. The figures, tools, and mahogany tree represent this industry. The entire coat of arms is surrounded by fifty mahogany leaves. The national motto, Sub Umbra Floreo, meaning “I Flourish in the Shade”, is written in the lower part of the coat of arms.
The flag of Belize is one of the few national flags to have humans as a major part of the design.
