Eruption! Mt Ruapehu, New Zealand
Kiwi Vista - Scenic Collection
While the violence of Mt Ruapehu creates an exciting spectacle, it is hard to imagine that this period of activity is just another phase in its volcanic history, which is thought to have begun almost one million years ago. In the past, lahars (mudflows) from its eruptions have damaged skifield facilities and bridges, and in 1953 were responsible for the collapse of the Tangiwai Rail Bridge, resulting in the death of 151 people.
