In memory of General Sam Houston, who defeated the Mexican General Santa Anna at San Jacinto, April 21st 22nd, 1836, liberation Texas from Mexican rule; elected President of the Republic of Texas, September, 1836, and served until Texas became a State of the Union in 1845; elected United States Senator 1846-1859; served as Governor from 1859 to 1861.
