Virginia - Winchester, General Morgan's Home

General Morgan's Home, Winchester, Virginia

Gen. Daniel Morgan, of Revolutionary fame, had this house built on Amherst street about 1790 for his daughter, Mrs. Betsey Heard, and named it "Amber Hill."  Morgan himself died here July 6, 1802, after having lived at "Soldier's Rest" and "Saratoga" two homes built by him in Clarke County.  "Amber Hill" was constructed after German model by Hessian stone masons, captured at Trenton and Saratoga, and brought to Winchester among 1600 prisoners of war.
